Black Sesame Glutinous Rice Balls – Chinese Traditional Food on Lantern Festival

The 15th day of the first lunar month is the Lantern Festival, a traditional Chinese festival. Eating glutinous rice balls is a custom on this day. So today’s recipe is black sesame glutinous rice balls. I have also made glutinous rice balls with bean paste filling before.

The custom of eating glutinous rice balls during the Lantern Festival has a long history in China. It can also be served as a snack or dessert after a meal.

Glutinous rice ball symbolizes reunion and beauty. In traditional Chinese culture, round foods are often given auspicious and harmonious meanings.

In addition, glutinous rice balls also have a sweet taste, representing the sweetness and happiness of life.

Ingredients:

Cooked black sesame seeds. Black sesame seeds can be roasted or fried until cooked

Lard. The addition of lard can make the filling stick together and make it easier to shape. Moreover, the lard will melt when heated, making the filling liquid and taste more delicious.

Sugar. Soft white sugar and fine white sugar are optional. If you like it sweeter, you can add more.


Instructions:

1. Grind the cooked sesame seeds in a food processor.


2. Mix the sesame powder, lard, and sugar in a large bowl.

3. Make 14 sesame balls


4. Add freshly boiled water to the glutinous rice flour, make a dough, if you feel the water is too much, add some glutinous rice flour, make a dough.


5. Roll out a long cylinder, cut into discs.

6. Flatten each one, take one, make it larger with your hands, place a sesame ball in the middle, slowly wrap it inside, complete a glutinous sesame ball, do the same for the rest sesame balls.


7. Heat a pot of water, bring to a boil, add balls, boil until cooked through, when you see the balls floating, they are almost done.

8. Transfer to a bowl, the black sesame glutinous balls are ready.

Black Sesame Glutinous Rice Balls (Black Sesame Dumplings)

  • Sugar, 30 g
