Chinese Red Bean Rice Porridge

I think I can’t live without porridge or soup every day. For breakfast, porridge is always the protagonist. Porridge with various ingredients can supplement nutrition and strengthen the body.

Among the kinds of  red bean recipes, red bean porridge is the simplest. It only requires rice, red beans, water, a pressure cooker, and half an hour time. From the perspective of traditional Chinese medicine, red beans are good for the heart. Red beans are often paired with barley to remove wet qi from the body. But if your digestive function is not good, it is better not to eat or eat fewer beans.

Cooking notes:

  • Polished round-grained rice which grows in the northeast China is better for porridge.  It makes porridge more sticky and nutritious.
  • You should soak the rice before making porridge so that the porridge is cooked faster and tastes better.

  • If the red beans have not been soaked, use a pressure cooker,otherwise the red beans will not be cooked through in a short time.


50 gram polished round-grained rice

30 gram red bean

700 ml water


  1. Wash rice and red beans, Add rice, red beans, and water to a pressure cooker.
  2. Press the porridge button, serve it after about 35 minutes.
  3. Serve warm.
